The Eden Valley

The Eden Valley

This corner of Cumbria is often missed by visitors but those lucky enough to arrive here will find an unspoilt, traditional market town situated on the River Eden, surrounded by beautiful countryside. The town is a base for a wide range of activities from fell walking to the mysterious Nine Standards cairns or for more gentle strolls follow the disused railway line or the River Eden itself.

Kirkby Stephen West railway station is located on the famous Settle to Carlisle Railway line. This 72 mile stretch of railway is said by many to be England’s most scenic and passes through the rolling hills and market towns of the Eden Valley en route from the Yorkshire Dales to Carlisle.

In August 2011 the Stainmore railway celebrated the 150th anniversary of the opening of the railway line between the North East and Cumbria in 1861, and the re-opening of Kirkby Stephen East Station as a Railway Heritage Centre.

In summer the town is vibrant with floral displays and attractive gardens - helping to make Kirkby Stephen a Cumbria in Bloom winner. There are many charming villages throughout the Eden Valley such as Ravenstondale, Winton and Hartley some of which are within easy walking distance of Kirkby Stephen.

The Eden offers something for those looking for a more relaxing break. There is plenty for those with an interest in art, the stunning and varied landscape of the area has attracted numerous artists, many open their studios during Open Studios run by Eden Arts, normally held in September.
