Walking

Walking

There are endless possibilities for walking in the area surrounding Kirkby Stephen ranging from short lower level walks ideal for a cloudy day or higher fell walks offering amazing views across the Westmoreland Dales and Eden Valley. On a clear day you can have views from the peak of Wild Boar Fell to Morecombe Bay, The Howgill Fells and towards the Lake District but very rarely will you encounter a crowd. Classic fell walks such as Nine Standards Rigg, Wild Boar Fell, High Cup Nick and routes in The Howgills are on the doorstep and much of the surrounding upland is open access land, giving walkers the freedom to roam.

Kirkby Stephen itself is a fascinating town to explore on foot including narrow passageways and the beautiful Parish Church as well some lovely riverside walks and we have guides and information to help you make the most of your walk.

There are recognised trails and walks of various lengths enabling hikers to explore the landscape, villages, culture and history of the area and several long distance walks such as Wainwright's  Coast-to-Coast, The Pennine Journey and Lady Anne's Way cross the surrounding fells and pass through Kirkby Stephen.

We have some beautiful flora and fauna in the area and although we couldn't guarantee a sighting we can tell you where would be best to spot hares, red squirrels, visiting lapwings and curlews as well as wild flowers and butterflies.

As keen walkers ourselves we have explored much of the surrounding area and can give you advice and helpful tips and advice on where to walk and have a selection of guides and maps to borrow.
